THE QUEENS CONVENED ON MARCH 6, 2022 AND OCTOBER 1, 2022

ABOUT THE SHOW

I Am Queen is a stage show created by two Black women to share stories about Black women. The Epoch Tribe duo has been telling the stories of marginalized communities for nearly 15 years, but it’s the stories of Black people that are the cornerstone of their work. I Am Queen is an opportunity to widen the scope of what it’s like to live, love and evolve as Black women through their own voices against the backdrop of stunning visuals and sounds, live and onstage. Here’s what you can expect.

It’s an experience. It’s for us, by us, but all are welcome to bask in the warmth.

QUEEN CHARLOTTE WEEK 2022

It all started with an idea for a book. Photographer and About Face CLT leader Scott Gardner approached Hannah Hasan with an idea to capture the stories of Black women in Charlotte in photograph and prose for a fine art book. From there, the idea expanded to making this celebration of Black women accessible to the broader Charlotte community by curating an experience including art & performance, educational resources and events.

Queen Charlotte Week was a first of its kind, city-wide celebration of Black women in Charlotte inspired by the city’s namesake Queen Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The events calendar kicked off off with the premier of the I Am Queen Charlotte stage show and transitioned into a full schedule including community talkbacks, art walks, concerts, film screenings, an open mic night and ending with the Queens of the City concert.

The week was made possible through partnerships with individual artists, small to medium community organizations, and corporate and large nonprofit partners. Queen Charlotte Week showed what is possible when artists are entrusted to curate their work for the benefit of the greater community with organizational support. Thanks to co-presenting sponsors Blumenthal Performing Arts and Lendingtree, the generosity of The Infusion Fund and a host of other sponsors and partners we were able to make many events free of charge to the public. This includes the development of a curriculum for both adults and students, as well as the distribution of 500 paperback copies of I Am Queen Charlotte the book.

I Am Queen Charlotte the stage show was born from the movement that was the inaugural Queen Charlotte Week, and we’re grateful to our partners, sponsors and the community at large for their continued support of this work.
